What it does, and what it can't

You choose how long the fade is

The extension fades out and in separately, from 100 to 3000 ms. The Mac and Windows apps let you pick a preset and the fade-in length.

It fades before the sound stops, by looking back

The Mac and Windows apps cannot intercept another app's pause. So they hold the audio back by 0.1 to 0.35 seconds and, the moment it stops, apply the fade to the sound just before. If lip-sync matters, pick a shorter preset.

Calls and speech synthesis are left alone (Mac)

While a microphone is in use, the fade is switched off. So is audio that begins and ends gently, like synthesized speech, so the first and last syllables are never weakened.

Free, no ads, and your audio stays put

None of the versions store or send your audio. The source code is public on GitHub.

If something goes wrong

The Mac says it can't open the app

The app is made by an individual and is not notarized by Apple. Right-click the app, choose Open, then click Open again. You only need to do this once.

Windows says "Windows protected your PC"

The exe is not code-signed. Click "More info", then "Run anyway".

Windows asks me to install VB-CABLE

The app needs one unused audio output to move the original sound out of the way. A PC with two or more outputs, such as speakers and headphones, needs nothing extra. With only one output, install the free virtual cable VB-CABLE; the app's setup screen walks you through it.

The fade doesn't work on a site

The extension only runs on the sites in its supported list, and it can't work where a site ignores volume changes. The Mac and Windows apps don't depend on the site: they act on the overall sound.
